Thorens Reference and Prestige
In 1980, Thorens decided, regardless of cost, to develop and market an ultimative turntable. The result was called Thorens Reference, weighed 90 kg, was designed for up to three tonearms and had a tunable sub-chassis! Externally, the Reference looked like any kind of mass drive, in which simply a heavy platter is placed on an even heavier framework and smoothness is generated solely by mass. But the Reference was different, the design was much smarter. Simply, that it had a sub-chassis and the platter weighed only 6 kg, makes it unique. The model was made on request in an official edition of 100 pieces, customers could choose individual color combinations and order individual tonearms.
In 1983, for the 100th anniversary of the company, another large model entered the market: the Thorens Prestige. Qualitatively equivalent to the Reference, with sub-chassis and electrical lifts for two tonearms. A super drive also by today’s standards and unique because of its sub-chassis.

Thorens SPU 124 Moving Coil Cartridge
The SPU 124 modernizes the classic SPU design with several optimizations designed for optimum compatibility to the new Thorens TD 124 DD. The SPU 124 features a revised generator system which allows for a maximum output of 0.5 mV, relaxing the requirement for high gain transformer or active preamplification systems. While still making use of a highly polished Nude Elliptical stylus, the stylus tip mass has been reduced significantly, resulting in reduced VTF and higher tracking ability.
Thorens TAS 1500 Moving Coil Cartridge
The THORENS TAS 1500 is an MC pickup manufactured for THORENS in Japan. The aim of the development was the optimal combination of the pick-up in combination with the TD 1500 and TD 403 DD turntable and the TP 150 precision tonearm. With an output voltage of 0.6mV (5.5cm/sec) and 12 ohms internal resistance, the pick-up harmonizes with all common phono preamplifiers. A naked diamond with micro-linear cut in combination with a solid boron cantilever guarantee best pickup capability and sound quality.
Thorens TAS 1600 Moving Coil Cartridge
The newly developed Thorens TAS 1600 cartridge is a Japanese made low output MC that was specially developed for the Thorens TD 1600 and TD 1601. With an output voltage of 0.4 millivolts at 5.5 cm/s, it delivers sufficient levels to harmonize with common phono preamplifiers. With an internal resistance of 12 ohms, it feels in good hands at a terminating resistor of > 100 ohms. At the end of a massive boron cantilever sits a fine diamond with a line-contact cut, which elicits every musical fineness of the record groove.
